MARATHON MOTORS Blue Chip Severe Duty Motors, Hazardous Duty Division 1 Explosion Proof, Rigid Base

Marathon three-phase hazardous location AC motors do not require starting capacitors, run capacitors or centrifugal starting switches, all of which can wear out and fail. They have more torque and efficiency than single-phase hazardous location motors.

Working Mechanism

  • A basic alternating current motor consists of a wire coil and two fixed magnets surrounding a shaft.
  • When an alternating current (AC) charge is applied to a wire coil, it transforms into an electromagnet.
  • The electromagnet produces a magnetic field.
  • As the magnetic field is constantly changing due to rotation, it produces an electric current inside the rotor, according to the law of electromagnetism.

Features

  • They meet NEMA premium efficiency ratings.
  • These Blue Chip Series motors are made of 100% cast iron for rigidity and reduced vibration.
  • Their internal and external surfaces have epoxy paint applied to them.
  • They have carbon brushes that spark, so the enclosures have thick walls & long flanges where the end bells meet the frame.
  • The field wiring must be completed in a separate or connected wiring compartment that meets the same hazardous location class and group standards as the motor.
  • They come with a stainless steel nameplate and an oversized NEC-compliant conduit box that rotates to allow more field wiring and termination.

Standards and Approvals

  • Explosion Proof Class I, Division 1, Groups C & D and Class II, Division 1, Groups F & G
  • CSA
  • UL

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a TEFC enclosure?

A totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motor has a frame that prevents air exchange between the inside and outside of the motor. This prevents airborne contamination and to a lesser extent, liquids from entering the motor. An external fan blows air over the frame to cool the motor, and the frame is ribbed to increase the surface area for heat dissipation.

What is Class I Division 1?

Division 1 is a subset of Class I. It is defined as an area where explosive or flammable gases, vapours or liquids can exist under normal, everyday operating conditions.

What kinds of environment are these motors used in?

These motors are intended for environments where flammable vapours or gases (such as propane, ethylene & methane) are present. These explosion-proof motors are also suitable for areas with combustible dust (charcoal / carbon black / grain dust).
