Working Mechanism

  • Eaton EDR-5000 Series relays use a combination of time-overcurrent and instantaneous overcurrent elements to detect faults in the distribution system.
  • The time-overcurrent element detects overcurrent conditions that persist for a certain amount of time.
  • The instantaneous overcurrent elements, on the other hand, detect high-magnitude fault currents, such as short circuits, to prevent damage to the equipment.

Features

  • These protective relays are capable of detecting and responding to faults or abnormal conditions in the distribution network.
  • They also provide complete metering, protection and control of all voltages in a single compact case, thereby reducing panel space and wiring.
  • They are designed to meet or exceed instantaneous and time overcurrent requirements during faulty conditions.
  • They are installed on the primary side of distribution transformers via a semi-flush mounting method and are designed to detect faults like overcurrents, under / overvoltage and phase loss.
  • They also include other features like zone-selective interlocking, arc flash reduction and integral self-diagnostic facility to reduce maintenance time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of semi-flush mounting?

These relays are installed using a semi-flush mounting method, wherein the relay is partially recessed into a wall or panel, leaving a portion exposed for easy maintenance and troubleshooting purposes.

What is zone selective interlocking?

Zone selective interlocking improves coordination and tripping time between protective relays in different zones of a power system, where the closest protective device to the fault gets tripped while others remain unaffected. It allows faster isolation and reduces the number of circuit breakers that need to be tripped in the event of a fault, thereby resulting in fewer power outages.

What is an arc flash?

Arc flash is a type of electrical explosion that may be caused when an electric arc forms between two conductors, releasing a tremendous amount of energy in the form of heat, light and pressure. Eaton distribution relays improve safety against such hazardous arc flashes by containing & redirecting the arc flash and destroying it completely.
