What are the advantages of woodruff keys?

Woodruff key stocks may be used over key slots of tapered shafts as they can get aligned via slight rotation in their seat. The extra key depth in the shaft prevent slipping over the shafts. Since they are not fitted at the shaft end, stress concentration is reduced at the shaft end. These keys are ideal for assemblies that are rotating at high speeds.

How to install a woodruff key?

Press the key into the semi-circular key slot (milled into the shaft). Tap the flat, protruding key face using a hammer / mallet to seat the key firmly. Allign the flat surface parallel to the shaft. The key face may extend above the shaft's surface to lock the mated component in place. During installation, if the key slips out of the grooved key slot, then either the size is too small or the key is not press-fitted properly.
